Edapally, India: Long-dormant grade separation project set to resume |
A long-dormant project to construct an over-bridge, associated highway improvements and to eliminate the very busy level crossing adjacent to the Edapally railway station in Kerala is set to resume.
Construction of the highway infrastructure to link with the road-over- rail bridge came to a stand more than two years ago when the contractor walked off the job. This left the span crossing the railway which had previously been constructed by the railway sitting in splendid isolation while the level crossing remained in use.
|
|
Now, central government funds totalling INR 360m is to be made available to allow work to resume and eliminate the Edapally level crossing on National Highway 17 which is notorious for the delays it causes to road traffic

Margao, India: Improvements to make journey safer for students |
A recent fatal accident at the level crossing in Margao, Goa, has set officials thinking about how best they might avoid a similar accident in the future. Although there is a subway at the Margao crossing it is prone to flooding and is thus unattractive to pedestrians, many of whom cross the railway at grade. One idea is to construct a raised walkway within the subway to create a dry route under the railway. Another idea is for a footbridge to be built as a component of a longer term scheme to better manage risk arising at the level crossing.

Chromepet, India: Land acquisition problems stall underpass project |
More than 16 months after work began on the limited-use subway (LUS), replacing the existing railway line in Chromepet, Tamil Nadu, the INR 75.5 project has hit a roadblock.
The state highways department is finding it difficult to acquire land to construct ramps on either side of the rail line. The department needs 21 metres on either side of the level-crossing.
Originally, the project was expected to be completed in a year after the work started on February 27th, 2009. Works by Southern Railway have been moving slowly and not even 10% of the total work has been completed. While the project has been facing opposition from around 400 families who live on either side of the level crossing, the private contractor appointed by Southern Railway has diverted its workers to other sites, causing delay, sources said.
|
|
Southern Railway’s decided in 1988 to replace the level crossing with a pedestrian subway, but because of a delay in executing it, state highways became involved in 2008 and the project was re-designed as a road under bridge, as it would allow all vehicles including MTC buses to use the subway.
According to the blueprint, the subway could be used by two-wheelers, cars and jeeps. It would have ramps, storm water drains and staircases would be an add-on.
