Pune, India: Solar power to the fore |
Frequent power cuts, some of them of long duration are driving an increased use of solar power at level crossings on the Pune Division of India’s Central Railway. Solar panels to power LED signals and lighting are to be installed at level crossings between Ghorpadi and Miraj.

This is an extension of the now established use of solar power at some of the level crossings between Pune and Lonavla.

Ireland / Netherlands: Irish level crossing is a first for Vialis |
Vialis, a division of Volker-Wessels has received a contract to supply Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) with a complete full barrier level crossing system.

Utrecht, Nethelands: Carbon neutral level crossings |
One of the entries in a competition organised by ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager, is for a carbon neutral level crossing. Although not one of the three finalists of the competition to find ideas to reduce the environmental impact of the railway, ProRail have indicated that the carbon neutral idea may yet bear fruit as they will further investigate the other ideas submitted.

Montevideo, Uruguay: Widespread upgrades under way |
Waiting times for motorists at level crossings are being reduced at 75 level crossings in the greater Montevideo area of Uruguay. This is achieved by moving from track circuit to predictor detection of approaching trains. |

Additionally the level crossings are all being refurbished with enhanced signage and better pedestrian facilities.
